East Coast Comic Con 2019

As a person who gripes about COMIC cons having too many things with movies and less with COMICS, this show was an absolute blast. Yes, I love hunting for signatures. I’m used to the Crain, Parrillo, Liefeld lines and for this one, I was extremely excited for Joe Sinnott, Larry Hama and Ron Wilson!
I got to chat with Al Milgrom, too, who was fascinating. The cool thing is that this guy wore SO many hats at Marvel. I handed him 3 books - One, he was an editor, the others were inks and pencils! Searching my collection for his works yielded some really neat finds, so it was nice to connect with him to find out a bit more about juggling multiple roles.
This was the second time I’ve had a chance to meet Larry Hama. I recalled that, as a kid, 2 out of 3 of the mail order books I ever did through Marvel direct (man, I feel old saying that.. anyone else?) were his - Wolverine and GI Joe. I loved his writing and pencils. It was so cool to hand him a couple of gems I’ve had for 30 years, including a Wolverine cover on Daredevil 196. |
Another book I had delivered to my house was Punisher War Journal, which was written by Carl Potts. It was nice to meet him today, albeit briefly, to have him sign my Punisher War Journal 6 and 7 from back then. I am regretting not bringing him my Power Man and Iron Fist 85. I just got a better copy, too. Next time.
I was very much looking forward to seeing Ken Wheaton there, as I commissioned a REALLY nice work from him. It got more comments at the CGC Facilitator than anything else I brought. It has received a lot of buzz on my Facebook page, too. Ken’s a really great illustrator, so if you don’t know his work, definitely look him up! |
The other comments at CGC were mostly “Man, that guy’s got a lot of Power Man and Iron Fist!” As such, you can imagine my excitement to meet Ron Wilson. I asked him what his favorite book he worked on was and, without hesitation, he said, “The Thing.” I lamented my recent loss of the entire 3 year (ish) run. I could feel the loss the moment I shipped them out.. like a part of me was missing. It was exciting to get to watch him work on a Thing he loves, too. Gorgeous sketch! He also helped me with these lovelies... |
All in all, what a day! So many different things can be accomplished at a con. While Cate was away at MegaCon in Orlando getting some of our best new stuff all prepped for you, I rocked Secaucus, NJ at East Coast Comic Con - mostly for our personal collection. Some of these books will be up for sale. Joe Sinnott signed my Ms. Marvel 1, I’ve got a 3.5 FF Annual 6 also signed by Sinnott that may go up for sale and possibly a couple of my Hamas. As I go through the list and think what I’d like to part with from this convention, though, there is not a lot. I really love this stuff. Right now, I’m reading classic PowerMan for the first time and it’s one of my absolute favorite reads every week.
I have a neat role here.. speculator, “flipper,” investor.. however someone wants to frame that.. I do provide collectibles for people that do not have the opportunity to attend these conferences and I adjust costs appropriately to cover my costs, no doubt. It Beyond that, though, I am a collector.. a reader and an avid appreciator of amazing cover art.
